When Everything is Okay

When Everything Is Okay

It is easy to pray when we're afraid.

I was reminded of that this week after Bryce was hurt in a work accident. For two days, uncertainty made prayer almost instinctive.

Then came relief.

And with relief came an unexpected question:

Do I seek God with the same intensity when everything is okay?

We finally received some much-needed rain. Perhaps even a little relief from these triple-digit temperatures is coming. My two newest books were published. My website continues to grow. New pieces of the work I've dreamed about are slowly becoming real.

Nothing dramatic is required of me in this moment.

Only gratitude.

Perhaps this is another kind of Sacred Pause: learning to notice the Divine not only when we are frightened, hurting, or searching for answers, but when the rain comes, the phone call brings good news, and for a moment, all is well.

This week, I invite you to pause and ask:

What is good right now that I have forgotten to notice?

And perhaps, before asking for anything else, simply say thank you.

Hello, friend, This week, I have felt drawn to the power of sacred words. As someone rooted in the Christian tradition, the Lord’s Prayer has been part of my spiritual life for as long as I can remember: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name… The words are so familiar that I can speak them without thinking. Perhaps you can too. Yet familiarity can be both a gift and a challenge. A prayer carried in memory is always available to us, but sometimes we recite it so automatically...

That is what selah invites us to do: pause, breathe, notice, and listen. Each week, this newsletter will offer a brief space away from the noise. You can expect reflections on...
